An afternoon in a radar room
The radar room was dark, and it was loud. The dark I expected. The loud I did not. Controllers were working traffic with a headset over one ear, and the other ear was in the room: side conversations, laughter, people getting up and walking between positions. Nobody stared at a scope. They glanced at their traffic the way a driver glances at a mirror and went back to the conversation. At some point I noticed I was whispering. Nobody who worked there was whispering.
I spent an afternoon in a busy approach control in the United States. I am not going to say which one. The traffic was light while I was there, and a real push, I am told, looks nothing like what I saw. Some controllers take up to two years to certify there.
The scopes are square. That sounds like a small detail, and it was one of the first things I noticed. A computer monitor is a wide rectangle; these are large, square, and very sharp, and they are easier on the eye than any monitor I have worked in front of. The video map, the boundaries and the fixes, is faint, drawn as a background, and the airplanes dominate the display. I stepped a couple of meters back and the map receded into texture. Up close the detail comes back. The display is built so the airplanes stay visible even at a distance.
Paper is still used. Flight strips print by the minute and move freely around the room, carried by hand to the positions that need them and slid into their slots. None of it was ceremonial.
I asked about go-arounds, expecting them to be a big deal. They were not, to the controllers I talked to. It is not a big problem, they told me: if everyone upstream does their job, there is always a new slot for the airplane.
The metering display was not configured for go-arounds that day, and nobody seemed to mind. My impression, and I am not sure I read it right, was that the automation is an aid the controllers can set aside, not something that decides for them. I was there for one afternoon, watching a practiced operation from behind, and I could easily be wrong.
